Bulldogs Win Season Opener on the Links

The Marianna Bulldogs teed off their 2025 season in winning fashion, claiming first place in their opening golf match under the leadership of new head coach, Ric Gable.

Gable, a Marianna High alumnus who once swung the clubs for the Bulldogs himself, assisted longtime coach Chris Truett last season before stepping into the head coaching role this year. His debut couldn’t have been scripted better, as the Bulldogs outshot four area teams to take the top spot.

Marianna posted a team score of 174, distancing themselves from the Chipley Tigers, who finished second with 187. The Altha Wildcats claimed third with 194, while Bethlehem turned in 197 and Poplar Springs rounded out the competition at 209.

Senior leader Creed Whitworth set the pace for Marianna with a solid round of 42. He was followed closely by sophomore Andrew Law and junior Jackson Kent, who each carded 43s, while junior Rathan Barnes contributed a 45 to lock in the Bulldogs’ winning total.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bulldogs also opened strong, posting a combined 228. Senior Faye Olsen led the way with a 50, with senior Emma Poole adding a 55. Junior Emma Leavins shot a 60, and senior Paige Lawson rounded out the team effort with a 63.

Coach Gable was all smiles after his first victory at the helm, noting the poise and balance of his players. “It’s a great way to start the season,” he said, crediting both the boys and girls’ teams for their focus and teamwork.

With solid opening rounds in the books and a new era of Bulldog golf underway, the Bulldogs are already proving they’ll be a force to watch on the links this season.
