Cottondale’s Cinderella season advances in the playoffs

By: Shelia Mader

Cottondale’s Cinderella season came to an abrupt end temporarily last week when the Hornets faced Bethlehem in the first round of the district playoffs. They entered the matchup with an impressive 19-3 record, and two of those wins had come against Bethlehem, with no losses. Cottondale was awarded an at large bid and will play the Jay Lady Royals in Regional Semi-Finals.

The Hornets opened strong, taking the first set into overtime but fell 26-24. Bethlehem took set two 25-19 before closing it out 25-15 for the victory.

Taliah Peterson led the offense with 14 attacks, while Anslee Kelly followed with 10. Kendall Benefield and Anna Claire Speers each notched five aces. Benefield also tallied 24 digs, with Annelise Skipper adding nine. Speers led with 18 serve receives and 15 assists, while Skipper contributed another nine serve receives.

This group of Hornets was more than just a team, they were a family. Their chemistry, work ethic, and belief in each other carried them through every challenge and every win of their 19-3 season. They’ll return several experienced players next year, hungry to go even further in the playoffs.

For now, they’ll move on to the Regional Semi-Finals at Jay when they take on the Jay. They will take the court Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
