Convention Center opens, signaling new era for Jackson County tourism
After decades of planning, the long-awaited Convention Center at Endeavor officially opens its doors this July, marking a major milestone for Jackson County’s efforts to boost tourism and revitalize the local economy.
The project, which originated in the 1990s as part of Jackson County’s vision to attract visitors and stimulate economic growth, is finally coming to life thanks to years of strategic funding and community collaboration.
“We’ve been building toward this for a very long time,” said Kelsi Jackson, Executive Director of the Jackson County Tourist Development Council. “This facility represents a new chapter for Jackson County. It’s not just a building, it’s a tool for economic development, tourism, and community enrichment.”
The concept of a convention center was first introduced by local leaders at DHM (David H. Melvin) and Paul Donofro, Jr. in the early ‘90s. Their early work included laying the foundation for a tourist development tax (TDT), which would eventually fund the project.
In 2004, a 1% tourist tax was enacted specifically for the center’s construction. Over time, the rate increased to 2%, with funds locked into a secure account. By 2022, over $2.1 million had been saved. When a separate resiliency hub grant fell through, the county pivoted and committed fully to the convention center.
In 2023, CGM Construction Group LLC (Colquitt, GA) was awarded the construction contract with a winning bid exceeding $3.1 million. Additional support came from the state, which contributed $1 million initially, followed by another $500,000 for site work. The final project cost is estimated between $3.5 and $4 million, funded by a combination of TDT revenue and state appropriations.
“We had to make some adjustments to stay within budget, but the final result is something the whole county can be proud of,” Jackson said.
The Convention Center at Endeavor will debut with its first public event in June, when Agape Ballet and Performing Arts presents The Little Mermaid. The event is already drawing attention from local residents and nearby communities. It is scheduled for June 2-7, 2025.
According to Jackson, “We’re projecting between $100,000 and $200,000 in economic impact just from the first four events alone. That’s revenue for local hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and more.”
The Chamber of Commerce is handling facility bookings and marketing. Rental rates are set at approximately $1,000 per event, with flexibility based on the specifics of each booking.
The grand opening ceremony is scheduled for July 17, with tickets available through the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce website. A public open house will follow on July 31, offering tours, Q&A sessions, and bus rides showcasing other developments in the Endeavor Park area.
“This facility is a point of pride,” Jackson added. “It’s the result of decades of vision and commitment. We’re excited to welcome residents and visitors alike into this beautiful new space.”
Other events scheduled throughout the summer include July 19, Murder dinner; July 27, Wedding Expo; August 1, Non profit Back To School; August 21, Breakfast Club.
