The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners formally recognized a century of life, legacy, and community impact during its April 14 meeting, ratifying a proclamation honoring Katrina Pittman Olds on her 100th birthday.
Mrs. Olds, who turned 100 on April 9, was celebrated for a lifetime defined by faith, family, perseverance, and service. The proclamation, presented earlier by Commissioner Dr. Willie Spires due to the timing of her birthday celebration, was officially approved by the board during the meeting.
County Administrator Jim Dean introduced the item, noting the recognition highlights Mrs. Olds’ enduring contributions and the example she has set for generations.
The proclamation described Mrs. Olds as “a lifelong example of strength, perseverance, and grace,” recognizing not only her longevity but the values she carried through a century marked by profound social and historical change.
It also honored her role as a devoted matriarch, noting her influence as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Her family’s accomplishments, the board noted, reflect the foundation she built through “sacrifice, encouragement, and steadfast love.”
Commissioners emphasized her resilience and determination, particularly in ensuring opportunities for future generations, even during difficult times. Her commitment to education and personal growth was also highlighted as a lasting part of her legacy.
Dr. Willie Spires, who had the honor of presenting the proclamation to Mrs. Olds in advance, shared a personal connection that made the moment even more meaningful. He noted that he and Mrs. Olds’ son were classmates, adding a special hometown connection to the recognition.
The board unanimously approved the proclamation, joining family, friends, and the wider community in celebrating the milestone.
Reaching 100 years of age is a rare achievement, and commissioners agreed it was fitting for Jackson County to formally honor a resident whose life story continues to inspire.
As the proclamation concluded, the board extended its appreciation for Mrs. Olds’ lifetime of contributions and offered well wishes for continued blessings in the years ahead.
