Laughter surrounds Melons in the Park event

By: Peyton Gay

On a beautiful Saturday, the Marianna City Farmers Market added some extra flair to their regular Farmer”s Market. The organization hosted their annual Melons in the Park event. Many local organizations and businesses set up under the Madison Park pavilion to share their items with the community. Outside the pavilion on the grass, the Marianna Women’s Club hosted watermelon bowling and crafts for the kids. The kids were able to make their own farm animal out of a paper plate!

Staged throughout the morning, there was a watermelon race and a watermelon eating contest; with both events sponsored by Farm Credit. Participants in these two events competed to earn the top prize of $75 dollars with second place earning $50 and third place earning $25. The participants of the watermelon race also took their watermelon home with them. Kids were also able to catch a break from the heat by enjoying the park’s splashpads. With Friday the 20th being the first day of summer, this event was the perfect way for the community to enjoy the beautiful weather and everything summer has to offer.
