Alford Community Organization eases back-to-school burden

The Alford Community Center was bustling with excitement Thursday evening as the Alford Community Organization (ACO) hosted its much-anticipated annual Back-to-School Bash. Now in its fourth year, the event has become a beloved tradition, one that brings joy, relief, and a renewed sense of community as families prepare for the upcoming school year.

As the sun dipped low over Alford, children laughed, played, and left the event with bags full of school supplies, their arms loaded, and their spirits lifted. For parents juggling the many costs that come with back-to-school season, the event was more than just a giveaway, it was a moment of genuine support and compassion.

ACO Public Relations Representative Somer Holland emphasized how personal the event is for the organization. “This event is near and dear to our hearts because most of us have had children and grandchildren that have gone through our local schools,” she said. “We also have educators on the ACO who have seen firsthand the financial burden school supplies can place on families. This is our way of giving back, ensuring kids have what they need while helping parents save for other necessities like school clothes or new shoes.”

The evening was filled with more than just supplies. There were games and activities that kept the kids smiling from ear to ear, and no one turned down the offer of a refreshing popsicle on a warm summer night. It was a celebration that reminded everyone what community really means, lifting each other up, especially when it’s needed most.

One couple, who attended with their three school-age children, shared their gratitude. “The cost of living isn’t getting any cheaper,” the father said. “When you’ve got three kids, everything triples, backpacks, notebooks, lunchboxes, you name it. This kind of support makes a big difference. And the kids love it, they get to see their friends again before school starts. It’s a win all around.”

The ACO doesn’t just show up in August, they’re a pillar of the community year-round. From Easter egg hunts and fall festivals to summer fun and Christmas magic, the organization pours its heart into Alford in every season.

With every backpack filled and every popsicle handed out, the ACO once again proved that even the smallest town can make a big impact, especially when powered by people who care.
