By: Shelia Mader
The Junior League division at Optimist Park has long been considered the granddaddy of them all. Every season, players from the Teeny Mites, Tiny Mites, Midget, and Pee Wee divisions watch closely, dreaming of the day they will take the field under the lights and compete for a championship of their own.
Despite a season shortened by weather-related cancellations, the Junior League players made the most of every opportunity, giving their all each time they stepped onto the field.
On June 1, the top-seeded Fire earned a trip to the championship match, where they faced the third-seeded Crushers. The Crushers secured their place in the title game with a convincing 3-0 shutout victory over United, while the Fire advanced after edging Arsenal in a thrilling 4-3 contest.
The championship match proved to be everything fans could have hoped for, featuring a defensive battle that kept spectators on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Both teams fought tirelessly, making every possession count in a game where scoring opportunities were hard to come by.
The Fire struck first with a goal from Caleb Hoover, but the contest remained tightly contested throughout, tied at one throughout most of the game. The decisive moment came late in the match when Curtis Harris Jr. found the back of the net, giving the Fire the lead and ultimately securing the Junior League championship.
Statistics for the Crushers were unavailable at press time.
Members of the championship-winning Fire team were Macie Andreu, Will Andreu, Ayden Brown, Tristan Davis, Ryker Haller, Curtis Harris Jr., Cataleya Hodges, Caleb Hoover, Malachi Hoover, Canaan Langland, Jordan Martinez, Jesse Price, Trevin Robarge, Jacob Stafford, and Emir Torres. The team was coached by Barry Stafford and T.J. Robarge.
Congratulations to the Fire on an outstanding championship season and to the Crushers on their impressive runner-up finish. Both teams represented the Junior League division with determination, sportsmanship, and pride.
