Hornets Sting the Rattlers

The Cottondale Hornets wasted no time making a statement Friday night under the bright lights at FAMU’s stadium. After finishing last year’s regular season with a perfect 9-0 record, the Hornets showed they still pack plenty of firepower, rolling past the Baby Rattlers in decisive fashion, 48-16.

From the opening kickoff, it was clear the Hornets had come to play. Cottondale jumped out to a commanding 16-0 lead in the first quarter and doubled down before the break, taking a 40-0 advantage into halftime. The teams traded scores in the third quarter, but Cottondale held firm with a 48-8 lead heading into the final frame. With the outcome all but secured, Coach Chris Obert turned to his bench, giving his starters some well-earned rest and valuable game experience to the younger Hornets. The reserves held their ground, allowing just one late touchdown to seal the 48-16 victory.

Quarterback Nick Heinemann turned in a near-perfect performance, completing six of seven passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target of the night was Tramond Collins, who hauled in four catches for 140 yards and a score. Trashonn Collins also made his presence felt, pulling down two receptions for 42 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, Zacarius Collins powered the run game with 18 carries for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He was joined by Tyler Jones, who contributed 67 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.

With the win, Cottondale evens its record at 1-1 on the young season. The Hornets will enjoy a bye week before returning to action on September 12, when they travel to Freeport to battle the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
