Inside the Cupboard

One team is left standing as I am writing this week’s Cupboard.

The Sneads Pirates are set to make the trip to Chiefland Friday night for a chance to advance in the playoffs. Win or lose, the Pirates have had a good season and can hold their head high. They are the county champs having beaten Cottondale, Graceville, and Marianna this season.

To my knowledge (and we all know how I strive to get all the ins and outs from our county teams), there were no negative issues throughout their season.

That equals success in my book. We are heading into basketball and soccer season now. I can tell you I am impressed with our Marianna K8 coaches for both middle school basketball and soccer.

As of this writing, they’ve played a little over a week of games and I have scores, books, and stats from every game. The Times is working hard to utilize our new website to its fullest. With that being said, we are posting scores from the previous night/day the following day on our website. This will not change our reporting of the games each Thursday but will give everyone current scores and updates. That adds to my plea for coaches, assistant coaches, stat keepers ensure we get information that would otherwise not be available to our readers.

As football season starts at Optimist Park and Sneads Rec, I send out texts to all the coaches and always note, there are a few news ones that sprout up from season to season.

I am never surprised when I see responses sent in group text messages that read, “Ya’ll newbies, let me just go ahead and tell you about Shelia Mader. You best go ahead and answer when she texts the first time because she’s not shy on that phone. She’ll text till she gets what she wants.” And for the record, that doesn’t bother me one iota.

I want every kiddo to have the opportunity to see his/her name and/or picture in the Jackson County Times. So, attention all coaches, when I bug the dickens out of you, it’s not because I enjoy it (although I do have a few that I enjoy rattling their cage), it’s for the kids and that’s exactly why coaches volunteer to coach at that level. It certainly isn’t for the pay.

As far as school sports, I can get me an attitude when they don’t respond. I know the salary is not earth shattering but it was no secret when you accepted the job.

As a coach, you are to promote and develop your players. Somewhere buried deep is a sentence that says, if you are being paid a supplement, you are not to draw more than two because you are obligated to give two hours each day to that sport. So get those results to me and keep me a happy camper!
