Although unable to attend the June 23 meeting of the Jackson County Board of County Commissioners, Mr. Shira McKinnie Sr. was recognized in absentia as commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation honoring his upcoming 100th birthday and a lifetime of service, sacrifice, and devotion to family. Born July 30, 1926, Mr. McKinnie will celebrate an extraordinary milestone this summer, marking a full century of life that has spanned some of the most significant moments in American history. The proclamation recognized not only his longevity but also the values that have defined his remarkable journey: faith, hard work, patriotism, and an unwavering commitment to family. One of twelve children, Mr. McKinnie came of age during a transformative era in our nation’s history. As a young man, he answered the call to serve, enlisting in the Army Air Forces at Camp Blanding, Florida, on July 8, 1945, during the closing days of World War II. Equally noteworthy, is the family legacy he and his beloved wife, the late Chelsea Dillard McKinnie, built together. Their marriage spanned an incredible 70 years and was blessed with 13 children, along with generations of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who continue to carry forward the values he instilled. Throughout his life, Mr. McKinnie worked tirelessly in a variety of roles, including farmer, factory worker, and small business owner. His life reflects the character and resilience of what is often called the "Greatest Generation," men and women whose determination helped shape the communities and country we know today. Following the reading of the proclamation, commissioners praised Mr. McKinnie’s achievement, noting that reaching 100 years of age is a rare and remarkable accomplishment worthy of celebration. The Board of County Commissioners extended its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Mr. McKinnie and his family as they prepare to celebrate this historic occasion. His century-long story stands as a lasting testament to service, perseverance, faith, and family, leaving a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
