Meet Peter "Sonny" Fortunato Candidate for Jackson County District 2 Commissioner

I’m Peter “Sonny” Fortunato—a devoted husband, a man of faith, and a lifelong public servant. My journey has taken me from the front lines of law enforcement and military service to the heart of our community, where I now seek to serve as your District 2 Commissioner.

My faith journey began in the parking lot of Jackson Hospital, where I came to know the Lord. Since 2014, I’ve been a committed member of New Hope Baptist Church. My relationship with Christ fuels my passion for service—whether it’s volunteering with Innovative Charities to distribute food, ministering to nursing home residents, or engaging in sidewalk evangelism. I believe in serving others with humility, compassion, and purpose.

For 28 years, my life was dedicated to public safety as a law enforcement officer. Served in roles that included Investigator, Fugitive Squad member, SWAT team member, Detective, K9 Handler, Supervisor, and Operational Supervisor at Fort Lauderdale International Airport following 9/11. I was honored to receive two Combat Crosses, a Life Saving Award, and a 200 SWAT Missions Bar—recognition of a career built on courage, commitment, and care for others.

My service extended overseas as a military contractor for the Department of Defense and the Department of the Army. Embedded with the Army’s 4-25th out of Alaska, I was part of the Focus Targeting Force in Afghanistan, conducting high-risk operations including J-PEL (Joint Prioritized Effects List) missions. During one of these missions, I was injured, and a subsequent surgery left me partially paralyzed. Through five years of intense rehabilitation—and by God’s grace—I relearned to walk. That journey deepened my faith and strengthened my resolve to serve others.

Today, I live to give back. Whether it’s helping a neighbor, sharing the gospel, or working to improve our community, I believe in putting others first—not for recognition, but because it’s the right thing to do.

As your Commissioner, I will bring the same dedication, resilience, and servant leadership that have defined my life. I’m not here to make promises I can’t keep. I’m here to listen, to work hard, and to do what’s best for our community—farmers, teachers, small business owners, and families alike.

With your trust, we can build a stronger, safer, and more united Jackson County—honoring our roots while shaping a future we can all be proud of.

Thank you for considering me as your Commissioner.
