Property Tax Overhaul Effects on Jackson County

Jackson County, Fla.- Florida’s push to overhaul property taxes is raising concern in Jackson County, where local officials say the impact could be heavy. Gov. Ron DeSantis told Fox News he hopes to eliminate property taxes for homesteaded residents, arguing that soaring valuations and rising local budgets have pushed homeowners too far. While the governor says local governments would still have more revenue than they had in 2019, Jackson County Property Appraiser Rebecca Morris-Haid says the change would leave a sizable gap at home. Her office estimates the county would lose roughly $5 million in revenue from homesteaded properties alone, not counting losses for municipalities. She noted the details continue to shift in Tallahassee, with multiple versions of the proposal being discussed, but said even the most limited version would deliver a financial hit the county “can’t survive on.”
