Sneads Volunteer Fire Department Welcomes New Fire Truck

The Sneads Volunteer Fire Department gathered with town officials, supporters, and community members to celebrate the arrival of its brand-new fire truck, a long-anticipated addition that will boost both safety and morale. The moment was marked with applause, handshakes, and heartfelt thanks to those who helped make the project possible.

Town Manager Bill Rentz explained that the truck was made possible through a state appropriation championed by Representative Shane Abbott, with vital support from Senator Jay Trumbull.

“This has been a project over two years in the making,” Rentz said. “The appropriation passed through both the House and Senate, and once the funding was secured, the truck was commissioned out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was supposed to be an 18-month build, but it actually came in a little early. The total cost was $624,000, and because the appropriation was over $700,000, the department was able to use the remaining funds for much-needed equipment, fire suits, and upgrades. Every penny went back into the fire department.”

Rentz also praised the State Fire Marshal’s Office for guiding the town through the process: “They were outstanding every step of the way. From reimbursements to making sure the truck was paid on time, their help was invaluable.”

The new truck replaces a 1999 engine, making it the department’s first new fire truck in 26 years. Chief Buddy Jeter, who has served with the department for 43 years and has been chief for 32, reflected on the moment:

“This truck represents more than equipment. It represents the support our community and our state leaders have for us. We’re grateful to everyone who made this possible.”

Deputy Chief Russell McAlpin, with 34 years of service, echoed that gratitude, noting how critical this upgrade is for the volunteers who answer calls around the clock.

Volunteer firefighter Eric Hill summed up the department’s emotions, “I can’t tell you what this means to our department. We answer calls anytime we’re needed, and sometimes even when we’re not called if we see a need. This is just an awesome windfall for us. We can’t thank Representative Abbott and Senator Trumbull enough for what they’ve done to make this happen.”

The Sneads Volunteer Fire Department currently has 15 dedicated members: Chief Buddy Jeter, Deputy Chief Russell McAlpin, Eric Hill, Timmy Perry, Thomas Grice, Alex McAlpin, James McAlpin, Shelly Simpson, Tony Potter, Terry Mercer, Shaun Saffold, Mike Wiggins, Greg Connors, Charleston Baxter, and Alton Renew.

Together, they form the backbone of the department, volunteering their time and risking their safety to protect the community.

After the formal presentation, attendees enjoyed a small reception arranged by the town office, complete with a fresh fruit and vegetable display. Laughter and applause filled the air as firefighters, families, and neighbors admired the gleaming new truck.

The event ended as it began: with gratitude. “This wouldn’t have been possible without Representative Abbott and Senator Trumbull,” Rentz said. “They both deserve our thanks for believing in this department and this town.”
