Bulldogs Battle Through Tough Season, Eye Growth Ahead
By: Shelia Mader
The Holmes County Blue Devils made their way to Bulldog Stadium Friday night and had their way with the Bulldogs. “Unstoppable” comes to mind when describing the Blue Devils’ offense as they rolled to a 42-8 victory, improving to 5-3 on the season while dropping Marianna to 1-7.
It’s been a challenging year for Marianna, a stark contrast from last season’s 10-0 perfect regular season. The Bulldogs lost a core group of experienced starters to graduation and transfers, leaving a young roster to rebuild and learn under Friday night lights. But despite the record, this group continues to give everything they have, 199% effort every game, and they’re clearly playing with the future in mind.
Holmes County opened the night on offense, marching 12 plays deep into the red zone before the Bulldog defense made a strong stand to keep them out of the end zone. Marianna’s first drive ended in a safety, giving the Blue Devils an early 2-0 lead and the ball back. Holmes County capitalized with a touchdown on their next possession, and though the conversion failed, they led 8-0.
The Blue Devils found the end zone again to stretch the lead to 16-0, but the Bulldogs responded with a spark. Quarterback Beau Swearingen connected with Kentrell James on a 34-yard touchdown strike, and the two-point conversion by Terrell James closed the gap to 16-8 midway through the second quarter. Holmes County, however, answered with two more touchdowns before halftime to carry a 30-8 lead into the locker room.
After the break, the Blue Devils added two more scores to seal the 42-8 win.
Defensively, Marianna showed grit and determination. Dacari Sims led the charge with 10 solo tackles, two assists, and an interception. Landon Cornelius added six solo tackles and one assist in a solid performance.
The Bulldogs now turn their focus to next week’s homecoming matchup against Taylor County. With the energy of homecoming week and a stadium full of support, Marianna hopes to channel that excitement into their second win of the season, and another step forward for this young, hard-working team.
