The Arnolds Journey Around the Famed Great Loop

By: Shelia Mader

Zack and Juanita Arnold recently shared the story of a lifetime with members of the Marianna Optimist Club, recounting their year-long journey along the famed Great Loop, a 6,000-mile boating route that winds through the eastern United States, the Great Lakes and portions of Canada. Following their presentation, Juanita Arnold provided additional insight into the adventure, which began in March 2025 after several years of preparation. The couple launched from Carrabelle, Florida, where their 44-foot twin-engine vessel, “Amazing Grace,” had been docked as they awaited retirement and the opportunity to set out. Accompanied by their Golden Retriever, Morty, who served as second mate, the Arnolds joined hundreds of fellow “loopers” who undertake the journey each year, navigating rivers, canals, lakes and more than 100 locks along the route.

Travel days typically lasted six to seven hours, though the couple emphasized that patience and flexibility were key, as weather often dictated their schedule. Some days were spent waiting safely in port, especially during busy weekends or unfavorable conditions. Life aboard “Amazing Grace” offered both comfort and routine, with a well-equipped galley allowing them to prepare many of their meals, though they enjoyed dining ashore about as often as they would at home. Weekly stops for groceries and supplies became part of the rhythm of the trip.

Arnold said the experience was defined not only by the miles traveled but by the people and places encountered along the way. From quiet small towns and farmers’ markets to bustling cities like Charleston and New York, the couple discovered a preference for the charm of less crowded destinations. They also visited museums, botanical gardens and scenic coastal communities, while moments on the water provided unforgettable views of sunrises, sunsets and star-filled skies far removed from light pollution. Canadian waters, in particular, stood out for their natural beauty, with vibrant landscapes, abundant flowers and pristine parks leaving a lasting impression.

The Arnolds formed lifelong friendships with fellow travelers, many of whom they had first met earlier as they passed through Carrabelle preparing for their own journeys. These connections, Arnold noted, became one of the most meaningful aspects of the trip. Though they do not plan to complete the full loop again, the couple looks forward to future boating adventures, including exploring the Tennessee River and possibly returning to Canada.

Throughout their journey, the Arnolds documented their experiences on a Facebook page titled “Wandering with Amazing Grace,” where followers can view photos and track their route, including a lighthearted tradition of sampling ice cream stops along the way.

The Arnolds showed a great slide show and spoke about the excitement and rigors of the trip as well as the blessings of meeting so many now life-long friends.
