Join the Panhandle Gator Club and Make a Difference

The Panhandle Gator Club is calling on Jackson Countians to join in supporting one of the University of Florida’s most inspiring causes, the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program. This program is changing lives by helping first-generation college students from low-income families achieve their dream of earning a UF degree. Many of these students are among the brightest in Florida but face real barriers, financial hardship, family struggles, and lack of resources. The program provides full scholarships and support, ensuring these students don’t have to choose between working full-time and pursuing an education.

The program began in 2006 under President Bernie Machen’s leadership and has since supported thousands of students, thanks to generous donations and community partnerships. The Panhandle Gator Club proudly contributes to this effort through local fundraisers, including its signature event, Orange and BOO, now in its 11th year.

Each year, the weekend before Halloween, during the off week before the Florida vs. Georgia game, Gator fans gather for a day of fun at Pirate’s Island Mini Golf. The event is open to everyone and completely free to play, thanks to Pirate’s Island donating the course. Participants compete for prizes in categories like lowest score, best team costume, and best team name. Sponsorships are available for those who want to help raise more funds, and every dollar goes toward the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program.

As longtime member Linn Morgan explained, “We decided years ago to focus our fundraising on helping these first-generation students. Some of their stories are incredible students living in cars, caring for siblings, or overcoming tough family circumstances, yet still earning their place at UF. Supporting them is the most meaningful thing we can do as Gators.”

The Panhandle Gator Club covers Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, and Washington counties, and they’re hoping to see more Jackson County faces join in. Whether you’re a UF alum, a fan, or just someone who loves being part of a good cause, you’re welcome. Membership isn’t limited to alumni, the club welcomes Gator fans, friends, and boosters alike.

In addition to Orange and BOO, the club hosts watch parties throughout the year, including the annual Florida vs. Florida State viewing party at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s in Marianna. These gatherings are a great way to meet other Gator supporters, enjoy some football, and maybe even win a little Gator swag.

The club also participates in International Gator Day, when Gators around the world volunteer in their communities. Meetings and most events are based out of Rocket Lanes in Panama City, but the club hopes to expand its reach into Jackson County with new members and leaders.

As Morgan put it, “We’d love to see more Jackson County folks get involved. There’s room for anyone who wants to help, whether it’s joining the board, volunteering at events, or just showing up to cheer with us. It’s all about community and making a difference.”

To learn more or get involved, visit the Panhandle Gator Club website or stop by one of their upcoming events. Together, we can grow the club and help more deserving students achieve their dreams of becoming proud Florida Gators.
