Hornets Sting Tigers to Close Out Season
By: Shelia Mader
The Cottondale Hornets traveled to Graceville Friday night to face their long-time county rivals. Graceville was back on the field this season after a two-year absence, while Cottondale entered the matchup with a 6–3 record and hopes of finishing strong. The Hornets didn’t disappoint, rolling to a 56–14 win.
Cottondale came out fast, putting up 20 points in the first quarter and adding two more touchdowns in the second to take a 34–0 lead into halftime. The Tigers showed some fight after the break, scoring a touchdown and conversion in the third quarter, but the Hornets answered with 16 more points. Both teams added a final touchdown in the fourth.
Graceville’s bright spot was freshman Avontae Bowden, who scored both Tiger touchdowns and added the conversion. With three more seasons ahead, he’s already giving Graceville fans plenty to cheer about.
For Cottondale, quarterback Nick Heinemann went 4-for-7 through the air for 65 yards and three touchdowns, all to the Collins brothers. Trayshonn Collins caught two passes for 37 yards and two touchdowns, while Tramond Collins hauled in one catch for 25 yards and a score.
Tramond also led the rushing attack with 103 yards on just three carries and another touchdown. Zacarius Collins added nine carries for 84 yards and a touchdown, Heinemann ran for 51 yards and a score, and Traisph Mullins broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run.
The Collins brothers continued to shine on special teams. Trayshonn thrilled the crowd with a 65-yard kickoff return, and Tramond followed with a 50-yard punt return.
Under new FHSAA playoff guidelines, neither Cottondale nor Graceville advanced to the postseason. The Hornets close the year at 7–3, while the Tigers end at 1–8, looking ahead to better days as their program rebuilds.
