Three recognized for reading 1000 books

The Jackson County School Board knows the importance of reading and reading at an early age to set the tone for what they are in hopes of becoming a lifetime pattern. The school board promotes reading before the child enters kindergarten in a brick-and-mortar school.

Those who are blessed to teach reading at any level believe that a child who acquires a love for reading at a very young age is more likely to continue with that same thought process throughout their lifetime. At the May school board meeting, the JCSB Board and superintendent had the pleasure of recognizing three children who had completed the 1000 books read before kindergarten. It was extra special since Wiley Byrd who is three preK completed his 1000 books just one month after his sister Amelia completed her 1000 books before she enters kindergarten in August. They successfully completed 1000 books and have yet to reach kindergarten.

Christopher Macnab exceeded his quota of 1000 books and is ready for kindergarten. Sawyer Grimsley and Wiley Byrd had a very unique way of cataloguing their books as they read them one by one. In an interview with the Times, Sawyer Grimsley told us her story, “I’m Sawyer and I’m five. I loved reading with my family and Mrs. Goodson. Every time we read a book like my favorite, Rainbow Fish, I got to move my train closer to 1000. I’m so proud I finished and I’m ready for kindergarten.” Sawyer’s mom, Elizabeth Grimsley explained how the train worked, “She little train along the glass after reading each category. Then after she read 1000 books, her big train was placed with all the other kids who had read 1000 books before kindergarten.”

Superintendent Hunter Nolen praised the three readers for their accomplishment as well as their parents. Board members congratulated everyone for the milestone they had reached.
