Gentry Edgar Taylor, a World War II Navy veteran, longtime community leader, and devoted family man, celebrated his 100th birthday on May 6, 2026, marking a century defined by military service, faith, leadership, and dedication to others.
Born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Taylor was inducted into the United States Navy at age 18 on October 18, 1944. After training in Great Lakes, Illinois, and Little Creek, Virginia, he served aboard the LSM-500 in the North Pacific during World War II. As a Seaman Third Class, he helped support critical amphibious operations transporting U.S. Marines, tanks, and supplies throughout the Pacific theater.
On September 2, 1945, while recovering from appendicitis at Pearl Harbor, Taylor witnessed the announcement of Japan’s surrender, bringing an end to the war. He received an honorable discharge on March 18, 1946.
Following his military service, Taylor graduated from the University of Tampa and built a successful career with State Farm Insurance in Winter Haven, Florida, retiring in 1990 as a senior underwriter. He remained deeply involved in veterans’ organizations and community service, including leadership roles with the Forty & Eight and American Legion Post 8.
A man of strong faith, Taylor served as a deacon in three Baptist churches and was active with The Gideons International and Toastmasters International.
Taylor shared 74 years of marriage with his late wife, Jeanette Allen Taylor. Together they raised three children and built a family legacy that now includes grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and multiple generations of military service.
Family, friends, and community leaders will honor Taylor’s remarkable life and legacy during a celebration later this month.
