Barbara Hinson

Barbara Hinson

Barbara Hinson passed from this life on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama.

Barbara was born on May 18, 1944, in Graceville to James Horace Ham & Mattie Lou Cooley Ham. She attended Union School near her home through 8th grade and then graduated as Salutatorian of the Graceville High School Class of 1962. She married Hubert Bruce Hinson in June of 1962. They briefly lived in Troy, Alabama and Ozark, Alabama before returning to Graceville in 1963. They spent five summers in Auburn, Alabama as Hubert completed his Master’s Degree at Auburn University. After their son was born in 1970, Barbara began her “college years” driving after work to Fort Rucker – and later, Dothan – taking night classes from Troy State. After her graduation, she began a 30-year career teaching 5th and 6th grades at Graceville Middle School. During this time, she was very involved with Junior Beta Club and served as the first Florida State Sponsor. She also had a “side gig” selling hundreds of sets of World Book Encyclopedias – which led to winning trips to various destinations, and she got “bit” by the travel bug. She traveled to all fifty states and all over the world with different tour groups and friends having various escapades and adventures and taking thousands of photographs that she loved to share with all of us. In her spare time, she was a fervent supporter of Auburn sports – especially football – and had season tickets for well over thirty years. She enjoyed every minute spent in Jordan-Hare Stadium! She was a very dedicated member of the Graceville Garden Club, the Jackson County Retired Educators and greatly enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her Class of 1962 classmates.

Barbara will be remembered by her former students as a teacher who cared and expected you to do your best. They knew she would do whatever she could to help them be successful adults. She will be remembered by her friends as the life of the party, the loudest talker, the first one to say “Let’s go!” and the one they could always count on.

She is survived by her loving family – her husband of 64 years, Hubert Hinson of Graceville, her sister and brother-in-law, Ann & Jimmy Hughes of Lynn Haven; her daughter and son-in-law, Regina & Terry Battles and her son, Keith Hinson all of Graceville. She also leaves behind three cherished granddaughters: Hadley Battles Stewart and her husband, Forrest, of Opelika, Alabama; Shelby Battles Tucker and her husband, Jake, of Uriah, Alabama and Katherine Battles of Graceville and the greatest joys of her last years, her great grandchildren, Mattie and Hank Stewart and the much-anticipated arrival of Charlotte Tucker this fall.

Her family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. (CDT), Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Damascus Baptist Church, 5083 Highway 77, Graceville, Florida. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. (CDT), Wednesday, July 1, 2026, also at Damascus Baptist Church. A private family burial will follow in the church cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home directing.
