Sneads wins county battle over Marianna 14-7

By: Shelia Mader

The Marianna Bulldogs traveled to Sneads last Friday night for some preseason action with cross-county rival, the Sneads Pirates. The Pirates took advantage of the home field and came away with a 14-7 win.

Marianna scored in the first quarter of the game with a touchdown.

In the second quarter, Justin Street snagged a 38-yard pass from Jamahri ‘DaeDae’ Scott. Dylan Stavley was perfect through the uprights to knot the game at seven.

Neither team crossed the goal lines in the third quarter. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Pirates scored on a 12-yard run by Tyran Thomas to put the Pirates up 13-7. Dylan Stavley kept it perfect through the uprights and Sneads had a 14-7 lead. That lead secured the win as it held till the final buzzer sounded.

Veteran coach Bill Thomas said, “It’s just a ball game. You don't ever get too excited. Don't get too depressed over it.”

About the particulars of the game, Thomas said, “I think that the defense is getting better. We're getting at them. Defense is playing hard. Our three linebackers played really fast, (Aidan Brown, Kevionne Chambers, Omari Hill). We got to dress up some miscues on offense. We had a couple of positions on defense that we think we can play better at than what we played this past week. We've got a couple or actually three positions on offense that we think are key, that need to play a little better, need to play better style football and, you know, work on us just to get better. We need to block better. We will see them Friday night. We will have to tackle better and line up correctly.”

About this Friday night’s game against county rival Cottondale, Thomas said, “I tell you what, Obert's got some speed this year now. Obert has two fast kids, the brothers and they are fast. I think it'll be a good game.”

We reached out for stats and comments from Marianna High School, but had no response prior to press time.
