Joy Hand takes the helm of Marianna High Volleyball programs

By Shelia Mader

Marianna High School is welcoming a familiar face to a new role this year as Joy Hand steps in to lead both the court and beach volleyball programs. While she's been a steady presence on campus as the school's weightlifting coach for the past six years, Hand is now shifting her focus entirely to volleyball, bringing her enthusiasm and commitment to two growing programs.

“I've had the privilege of coaching weightlifting in either an assistant or head coach role for over six years,” Hand said. “I also coached court volleyball for Special Olympics for a few years and played the sport many years ago, although volleyball today is very different than it was back then!”

Though this is her first year coaching MHS volleyball, Hand is already setting strong expectations for her players. “My expectations are for our team to play well together, giving it our all in every workout, practice, and game,” she said. “I want us to build each other up and enjoy the game.”

Hand will be leading both the traditional indoor volleyball team and the beach volleyball program. “Yes, I’ll be coaching both,” she confirmed. “The biggest challenge will be refining my volleyball coaching skills and syncing with the skill set of the players. The players are putting in the work, too. So, these next couple of weeks will help that process develop.”

The program is expected to feature both varsity and junior varsity teams this season. Hand will be joined by assistant coach Jasmine Bess, who brings a wealth of experience to the table. “Jasmine brings experience playing the game, coaching it, and she truly cares about the sport and the players. She’ll be assisting me in court volleyball and hopefully during beach season as well.”

In addition to her coaching duties, Hand will also be teaching Physical Education at Marianna High School this school year.

As she enters this new chapter, Hand is embracing the opportunity with gratitude and optimism. “I'm excited and looking forward to this school year and volleyball season. I have a lot to learn and look forward to a successful year on and off the court. I'm proud to be part of the MHS Family and grateful for this opportunity. Go Dawgs!”
