Marianna’s First Roundabout Nearing Completion
By Shelia Mader
The City of Marianna is moving steadily toward the completion of its first-ever roundabout, part of the Hospital Drive improvement project. According to City Manager William Long, the project has been underway since receiving its official Notice to Proceed on November 11, 2024, Veterans Day.
“This project included several different aspects beyond just the roundabout,” Long explained. “There was significant utility relocation, realignment of the roadway, and the creation of a holding pond behind Golson Elementary, near the hospital.”
Jake Mathis, engineer with David H. Melvin Engineering (DHM), noted that the intersection of Smith and Kelson closed February 11, 2025, to begin the main phase of construction. With 340 contract days scheduled, the current completion date is set for or before October 17, 2025.
As of mid-June, the project was around 75% complete, with steady progress continuing. “We’re right on course,” Long said. “We’ve had 26 weather days and a number of holidays that have to be factored into the schedule, but work remains on track.”
The holding pond construction is nearly complete, and sod work is expected to begin soon. Once finished, the roundabout is expected to improve traffic flow and safety in the area, even if the construction phase has been inconvenient for drivers.
“I know it’s been a disruption,” Long admitted, “but once it’s done, it will be a real asset to the community.”
