Back-to-School Giveaway Kicks Off with Big Turnout in Graceville

By Shelia Mader

The Graceville Civic Center was the place to be Saturday morning as families from Jackson County gathered for the first back-to-school giveaway of the 2025–2026 school year. Hosted by the City of Graceville, the event was held in the city’s 10,000+ square foot civic center, a community mainstay since its construction in 1978.

Parents and children began lining up nearly an hour before the official start time, eager to take part in the event that offered free school supplies to local students. From 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., a steady stream of excited kids and grateful parents made their way through the doors, receiving everything from backpacks and rulers to notebooks, pens, and paper, all free of charge. Leuenberger Piggly Wiggly furnished hot dogs, buns, and the trimmings to ensure no one was left hungry.

“This is important,” said Graceville City Manager Michelle Watkins. “The City of Graceville was proud to coordinate the Graceville Back-to-School Bash. The event would not have been possible without the support of our fellow agencies, financial sponsors, and volunteers. I estimate that 225-250 students were provided with a jumpstart for the upcoming school year. Above all else, we should be supporting our education system and students. Thanks to all involved.”

The City of Graceville received generous support from a host of local businesses, organizations, and individuals who helped make the event such a success. Piggly Wiggly not only fed those the attendees, but also handed out pre-packed bags of supplies until they ran out.

Additional support came from Sonny Fortunato, the Early Learning Coalition, the Graceville Fire Department, Reagan Hayes, Geanna Allen, and the Graceville Administration team, all of whom worked the event and assisted with crowd management and supply distribution. Tracie Andrews from Florida Lighting and Power assisted parents and students with their needs for the coming year. Sheriff Donnie Edenfield and his staff handed out 150 donated backpacks.

With the school year fast approaching, this community-driven event provided not only practical supplies but also a strong message of support and encouragement for students of all ages across Jackson County.
