Dreams Realized: Sneads Seniors Sign to Continue Baseball Careers
By: Shelia Mader
Last Friday marked a milestone moment for Sneads athletics and an even bigger one for two of its senior standouts.
Alex Gaines and Kinsey Ragans have spent most of their lives on the baseball field, and their final season in a Pirates uniform gave them plenty to be proud of. Sneads wrapped up the year with a 19-9 record and a district runner-up finish, capping off a memorable run for the senior class.
That success carried into Friday’s signing day, where both athletes made it official, putting pen to paper to continue their baseball careers at the collegiate level while pursuing their academic goals.
Gaines, a senior catcher who has been a steady presence behind the plate, turned in an impressive season. He posted a .279 batting average with a .470 on-base percentage, drove in 15 runs, and recorded a .989 fielding percentage. While playing college baseball had always been a dream, it was during his high school years that Gaines began to fully recognize his potential.
“It was most definitely a dream. I didn’t think it would come,” Gaines said. “But as I got into high school, I realized I had the talent and capability to play, and I worked hard for it. It’s a great school. It has good education programs. It’s just a great school all around.”
Gaines will continue his career at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he plans to pursue a degree in sports management.
Ragans has been a versatile force for the Pirates, contributing across the infield at second, third, and shortstop, along with time on the mound. His love for the game began early, stepping onto the field for the first time at just five years old, a passion that has now led him to the next level. Ragans had a .267 batting average with a .305 on-base percentage and recorded 10 of 10 swiped bases.
He will take his talents to Baptist University of Florida, transitioning from Pirate to Eagle.
“I am very strong in my faith, and I really like the coach there,” Ragans said. “I really like the program, and I love to play college ball, and it seemed like a good fit for me.”
Ragans plans to pursue a degree in business with a minor in sports medicine.
From the publisher and staff of the Jackson County Times, congratulations to both athletes on their achievements and best wishes as they take the next step in their baseball journeys.
