Everett Welch

Everett Welch is one of those rare young men who excels everywhere he goes, on the court, in the classroom, and beyond.

Basketball has been part of Everett’s life for as long as he can remember. From the moment he picked up a Little Tykes basketball, he was making shots from well beyond his years. That early passion turned into consistent success as he moved through rec basketball, middle school, and high school, always competing at a high level.

Everett was a key part of the Malone Tigers basketball program beginning in sixth grade, routinely playing above his level and producing year after year. This season marked a new chapter as he transferred to Dothan, trading a small school where “everybody knows your name” for a much larger environment where few knew him at first.

“It’s going good,” Everett said of the transition. “The schedule is new at the school. They use a block schedule. Instead of seven periods all year, I have four classes this semester, and we’ll start the others next semester.”

The adjustment has been smooth both academically and athletically. Everett said his new teammates welcomed him right away, and the results on the court speak for themselves. The Wolves have posted an impressive 17-1 record so far this season.

We caught up with Everett Friday while he was en route to Columbus, Georgia, for a matchup against the Kendrick Cherokees. The Wolves will enter the game at 17-1, facing a 9-2 Kendrick squad, with Everett confident his team will return home with an 18-1 record.

That same confidence carried over into the three-point shootout competition, where Everett once again proved preparation matters.

“I wasn’t really nervous going into it,” he said. “I kind of knew I could win because of my preparation, but I did have a little bit of jitters until I got up there and started shooting.”

He knocked down 10 of 12 shots in the opening round to advance to the championship. In the first championship round, he hit eight of 12, forcing a shootout. He made seven of nine in the first shootout round, only to be matched by his opponent. In the final round, Everett went five for six, edging out his competitor and claiming the three-point championship.

While Everett played point guard at Malone, he has shifted to a wing position at Dothan without missing a beat.

As for his future, his goal is simple and ambitious. “NBA,” he said, adding that he would also welcome the opportunity to play for the Florida Gators.

Different year, different school, same work ethic, same results. Everett Welch continues to prove he is not only a phenomenal athlete, but a standout student as well.

Everett is the son of Steve and Kelsey Welch. He has one older brother, Jackson, a freshman at Chipola College and a member of the Indians basketball team.
