Wednesday, January 7, 2026 marked an extraordinary moment for Jackson County Fire Rescue. The department was named the 2025 Rural EMS Provider of the Year for the State of Florida, an honor presented by Florida Health during its Excellence in Emergency Medical Services Awards Ceremony.
The award was accepted by Chief Charlie Brunner, Medical Directors Dr. Colby Redfield and Dr. Lynn Nguyen, Battalion Chief Josh Williams, and Division Chief Johnny Padgett.
Chief Brunner has led Jackson County Fire Rescue since January 2019 and, under his leadership, the department has shown steady and measurable improvement year after year.
This recognition reflects the hard work, dedication, innovation, and compassion that every crew member brings to each call. On some days, that can mean responding to as many as 70 calls in a 24-hour period. In a rural setting, those calls are often more complex, with limited access to critical care. Every decision carries weight, and the stakes are high.
This award is a testament to a department that consistently rises to the challenge.
The Times will have more coverage on this honor, including interviews with Chief Brunner and members of his staff.
