Florida Governor Ron DeSantis & First Lady announce funding for innovative cancer research

Tampa Fla. - On Wednesday, World Cancer Research Day, Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis announced a $60 million funding opportunity through the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund for innovative cancer research.

The announcement was made at the Department of Health’s World Cancer Research Day symposium held at the University of South Florida. The research focus will be on nutrition practices for cancer prevention or treatment.

According to the Florida Department of Health, the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund is meant to “support innovative cancer research and treatment models, including emerging research and treatment trends and promising treatments that may serve as catalysts for further research and treatments.”

“I was proud to announce that applications are opening this week for the next round of cancer research projects through the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund,” said Governor Ron DeSantis.

He continued, “These competitive grants are open to a wide range of institutions and researchers, with a focus on preventative nutrition as well as emerging medical treatment options for cancer patients. Investing in innovation today means saving lives tomorrow—and that’s why we will continue working to make Florida a beacon of hope in cancer research.”

First Lady Casey DeSantis said, “This year’s funding opportunity for the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund is strengthening our fight against cancer and supporting patients and their families across our state. This focus on nutrition research and preventative strategies directly aligns with the work of the Florida MAHA Commission and puts Florida at the forefront of discovering how what we eat can help beat disease.”

Since it started, the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund has given $80 million to 95 researchers and organizations in Florida. This shows Florida’s strong support for cancer research. This year, the total funding will be $140 million since the Fund began.
