Inside the Cupboard, May 22, 2025
Rec ball regular season has come to an end and for those who read my cupboard weekly, you know the season has taken its toll on me. Yes, sir, yes, mam, last week’s column was a repeat from the previous week. I didn’t notice that until the papers were returned to the office Wednesday evening. I’m old school (and old also) and although I proof the paper before it leaves the office to go to the printer in Bainbridge, I really proof it when the hard copy comes. Needless to say, my jaw dropped when I saw the front page of sports. At that point, what can you say? OOPS! Now that seems appropriate, right? Back at the ranch this week however things are clicking right along. The end of the fiscal year is closer than close for government agencies and that means changes, meetings, and lots of news going on in the ‘current affairs’ world. Do you see where I am headed with this little lead in? Sports came up on the short end of the stick. I’m making progress but it’s like molasses compared to pickle juice – slow, slow. Don’t doubt for a minute that I don’t still have those game-winning goals, homeruns, miraculous catches, and the list goes on documented for another edition of the Times. Summer is on the horizon and that’s the time I will be scurrying for stories. If you have stories of interest, what you think may be of interest, or just something that you thought about would be of interest to our readers, give me a holler. I have a few up my sleeve but I welcome all suggestions. At the progress I’m making playing catchup, it may be into mid-June before I start on my ‘summer’ stuff. But that’ll be all right, because it’ll just be a few weeks fresher in the scrapbook when parents get to that round to it assignment. In all seriousness, I know all too-well that my age is telling on me and my days are becoming more challenging with each passing week. However, I am as stubborn as any mule you’ve ever read, seen, or heard about. I’ve heard all the “Why don’t you do this?” Or “Why don’t you just cover ‘X’ number of games each week?” That’s not me, never has been, and never will be. I am working hard on working smarter and not harder (I’ve heard that a few 1000 times) but that stubborn streak is hard to deal with. Will next year be better? I don’t know but if it is, I hope it is not due to reduced numbers playing softball and baseball at the rec level. Those are some of the fondest memories kids will ever have and that’s why I do what I do. That’s the way it is from Inside the Cupboard.
