Florida State Parks Rank High Nationwide
By Shelia Mader
Florida continues to prove why it’s a top destination for nature lovers, with nine of its state parks making the 2025 State Park Index Top 100, tying with Texas and Pennsylvania for the most parks recognized nationally.
The annual index, compiled by HomeToGo, evaluates parks based on categories such as affordability, wildlife, solitude, and available activities. With one-third of Americans citing “exploring natural wonders” as a top travel priority for 2025, Florida’s natural gems are poised to attract visitors seeking both adventure and peace.
Among Florida’s standout locations are: #15 John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, #17 Silver Springs State Park, #20 Wekiwa Springs State Park, #33 Ichetucknee Springs State Park, #36 Florida Caverns State Park, #42 Anastasia State Park, #53 Manatee Springs State Park, #77 Suwannee River State Park, #99 Weeki Wachee Springs State Park
Florida Caverns: A Comeback Story
Not to be overlooked is Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna, Jackson County, ranked #36 and boasting one of the most compelling recovery stories since Hurricane Michael in 2018. The Category 5 storm devastated more than 90% of the park’s forest canopy and caused significant infrastructure damage.
Today, thanks to extensive restoration efforts, the park has not only recovered but thrived:
Restored with energy-efficient LED lighting, guided tours now illuminate fascinating formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and soda straws. Tours operate hourly from 9:00 A.M, to 4:00 P.M. CST and last about one hour, covering three-quarters of a mile underground.
A modern, air-conditioned facility houses educational exhibits, souvenirs, refreshments, and ticketing.
All 35 campsites are reopened and include electric and water hookups, plus renovated restroom and shower facilities.
The popular swimming hole and surrounding trails have reopened. Some pavilions and restrooms still operate with non-potable water, but overall access has been restored.
The newly rebuilt Hickory Pavilion now accommodates up to 100 guests for events ranging from weddings to reunions.
The park offers film presentations, museum-style exhibits, and customizable educational field trips for students and organizations.
Upcoming Rentals: Within the next 60–90 days, Cape Leisure Corporation will launch rentals for bikes, including cruisers, mountain bikes, and e-bikes, as well as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards for use on the scenic Chipola River.
With nine parks earning national recognition, Florida continues to offer something for everyone, whether it’s swimming in a spring, spelunking through ancient caverns, or paddling along rivers rich with wildlife. As travelers seek out serenity, affordability, and beauty in their 2025 adventures, Florida’s state parks are ready to deliver.
