Bascom’s Back-to-School Giveaway Brings Smiles and Supplies

By Shelia Mader

The Bascom City Hall was alive with excitement as children, parents, and volunteers came together for a successful back-to-school supply event hosted by the Town of Bascom and Bascom First Baptist Church.

The giveaway, organized by Michelle Clenney, drew an estimated 200 people who came out to ensure their children were ready for the upcoming school year. "I think the turnout was really good," Clenney said with a smile. "We had close to 200 people who came through to pick up much-needed and appreciated supplies. I think we counted 147 backpacks that we gave out filled with supplies.”

The effort extended well beyond the boundaries of Bascom, as families from Altha, Chattahoochee, Cottondale, Graceville, Marianna, Malone, and even Ashford, Alabama, made their way to the event.

While a similar giveaway was held the same day in Cottondale, Clenney said both events were well-attended. “Cottondale had one on Saturday at the same time as ours but I don’t think that affected our turnout at all. I understand they had a good crowd also,” she noted.

The Town of Bascom provided the use of City Hall for the distribution effort, ensuring the event could go forward rain or shine. Thankfully, the weather cooperated, allowing outdoor fun to be a major part of the day.

Bounce houses, games, and a towering water slide kept children entertained and cooled off in the summer heat. The water slide proved to be a fan favorite, drawing a steady line of eager participants throughout the day.

When the festivities wrapped up, students left with backpacks full of school supplies and memories of a fun-filled day with their community. The event marked another meaningful collaboration between Bascom’s local government and faith community, reinforcing the small town’s big heart.
