Ninth Annual Chipola College Mental Health Symposium Draws a Crowd

By: Shelia Mader

The 9th Annual Chipola Mental Health Symposium brought students, educators, and community partners together April 2 at the Chipola Cultural Center, continuing a growing tradition of mental health awareness in Jackson County.

Now in its ninth year, the symposium has steadily expanded in both participation and impact. What began in 2017 as a campus-centered event has developed into a broader community effort, connecting students with local agencies and resources while encouraging open conversations about mental health.

This year’s program featured student presentations on a range of topics, along with participation from area organizations that provided information on available services and support. A guest speaker also addressed attendees, reinforcing the importance of recognizing mental health challenges and reducing stigma.

Organizers built on the foundation of previous years by placing continued emphasis on education, early awareness, and community involvement. The event maintained its focus on giving students a platform to engage with real-world issues while also strengthening partnerships with local health providers and advocacy groups.

Faculty and staff involved in the symposium said the consistent growth of the event reflects a rising awareness of mental health needs, particularly among young adults. By combining academic perspectives with community resources, the symposium continues to serve as a bridge between the classroom and the wider support network available in the region.

The event remained free and open to the public, a key part of its mission to ensure accessibility and encourage participation beyond the college campus.

As the symposium moves forward, organizers hope to continue building on its momentum, expanding outreach and deepening its role as a resource for both students and the community.
