Pirates Shut Out Bulldogs on the Court

By: Shelia Mader

The Marianna Bulldogs made the short trip to Sneads on Tuesday, September 2, to face off against the Pirates, but the night belonged to Sneads. With a loud home crowd behind them and plenty of experience on the floor, the Pirates defended their court in dominant fashion, sweeping the Bulldogs in three straight sets.

Sneads set the tone early, taking the first set 25-18. They followed with a 25-16 win in the second before Marianna pushed hard in set three, battling point-for-point before the Pirates slipped away with a narrow 25-23 victory.

The Pirates’ offense was led by Naryah Dudley, who delivered 15 kills, while Shaleigh Harrell added eight kills and five aces. Dalexis Lewis chipped in seven kills. On defense, LaRay Gibbs led with 20 digs, backed by Danika Rogers (14), Morgan Veilleux (13), and Dudley (10). Veilleux also notched an impressive 33 assists.

Marianna’s stats will be published once available, but the Bulldogs’ heart and hustle were evident on the court. Despite facing a veteran Sneads squad with six seniors and two juniors, Marianna refused to fold, especially in the final set where they nearly forced a fourth.

The Bulldogs are a young team under new coaching leadership, and each match has shown steady growth. While Sneads benefits from years of chemistry and seasoned players, Marianna is building a foundation that promises long-term success. The fight they showed Tuesday night is a sign of good things to come as the Bulldogs continue to gain confidence, skill, and momentum.
