Mr. Larry Simmons, age 66 passed away on Tuesday, May 26th at The Sunland Center located in Marianna, Florida.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2nd at the Sunland Center Chapel in Marianna, FL with Pastor’s Deron Johnson and Clevelando Wedderburn officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery located at 4499 Franklin Street Marianna, FL with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton, FL directing.
Visitation will be held 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday June 2nd at the Sunland Center Chapel.
Larry Maxwell Simmons was born on April 10, 1960, in Gainesville, Florida. He was raised mostly by his grandmother, Ms. Lillie Maxwell.
Larry lived in several state facilities in Central Florida for much of his youth and early adulthood then came to live at Sunland in Marianna in June of 1990 where he lived in both the Adams House and the Grant House the next 36 years until his recent death.
Larry was athletic, gentle and always looked people in the eye and spoke when he saw them. He had a beaming smile and appreciated everything people did for him. He loved to shoot basketball with friends, receive attention and praise and had a huge affection for shoes, especially the high-end sports shoes. He enjoyed the multiple opportunities afforded to him and always like to hear people tell him how nicely dressed he was for such events like the Night to Shine spectacular held annually.
He is preceded in death by her and his parents, Joseph Simmons and Willie Mae Maxwell, brothers Joseph Simmons, Jr., Willie Eastman and Roy Lee Johnson as well as his long-time friend and Guardian Advocate, Ms. Easter Keys.
Larry was a well-loved and cared for by his Sunland family and will be missed by the many friendly and kind staff who served him for so many years.
