Joe Tom Johnson

Joe Tom Johnson, 90, of Chipley, Florida went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 25, 2025.

Joe was born March 10, 1935 in Lineville, AL to Edward and Margaret (Hallmark) Johnson. The family moved to Chipley in 1945 to open Johnson Department Store. Joe was a 1953 graduate of Chipley High School where he was the class salutatorian. He earned a BBA in Accounting from Florida State University. Joe met the love of his life, Cynthia (Williams) Johnson and they married in 1957.

In Atlanta, Joe had an accomplished business career in accounting and information systems Joe and Cynthia raised their family in the Stone Mountain area. In 1999, they moved back to Chipley where they enjoyed a long and happy retirement.

Joe was active in his church-First Baptist Church of Chipley- where he sang in the choir, served as a deacon, organized several men's ministry events and was a member of the Men's Bible Class.

Joe loved sports-especially FSU football, the Atlanta Falcons and Braves. He was also an avid fan of music starting in high school where he played the saxophone for the group The Foot Lifters. Later in life, Joe enjoyed collecting CD's of various music genres.

Joe was also involved in many civic activities. As a cancer survivor, Joe was active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He also participated on the building committee of the Washington County Library. Joe was the long-time treasurer of the Chipley chapter of the Kiwanis. He was also on the committee for the city Flagpole and Light project that was erected near I-10. He is credited with the City of Chipley town slogan which still stands today- Proud Heritage-Bright Future.

Joe also helped in the revitalization efforts of the Spanish Trail Playhouse.

Joe is survived by his wife of 68 years, Cynthia, his daughter Lynn (Mike) Tiller, of Flowery Branch, GA and son Mark (Kathy) Johnson, of Panama City. Grandchildren: Ansley (Kevin) Johnson of Decatur, GA., Tradd (Julia) Tiller, of Dunwoody, GA., Dallas (Ashtin) Johnson of Panama City, Emily Johnson of Panama City, Abby (Tyler) Helms of Panama City and Katie Johnson of Panama City.

He leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Lyla Jane Johnson, Jake Johnson, Greyson Helms, Eli Johnson and Ava Johnson.

He is preceded in death by his brother, William (Bill) Johnson, daughter, Jane Johnson Wolfe, son-in-law, John Wolfe and an infant grandchild, Clayton Tyler Wolfe.

The family will receive visitors at 1:00 P.M. with the funeral service at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday August 2, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Chipley. A graveside service will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
