Saundra Lee Applewhite, a cherished matriarch of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Marianna, Florida. Born on October 20, 1945, in Chattahoochee, Florida, Saundra's life was a testament to her selfless nature and enduring love for her family.
Saundra's early years were spent in the nurturing embrace of her parents, Troy Lee Tyus, Sr. and Vergelina McLane Tyus, both of whom preceded her in death, along with her beloved brother, Troy "Chuck" Tyus, Jr., and her sister, Dianne Tyus Berry, and brother-in-law, Spud Berry. Her legacy continues through her devoted children, Chris Applewhite (Kim) and Kevin Applewhite (Amanda), her adored granddaughters Stevie Applewhite and Morgan Gainer, adored grandsons Cole Applewhite and Turner Gainer, and her cherished great-grandsons, KP Garrett and Nate Applewhite. Saundra's memory will also be honored by her brother, Ted Tyus (Charlotte), her special uncle, Ronnie Carpenter, her loving nieces, DeAnne Berry, Leigh Chambers, Starla Chance, Cissy Bair, and Charly Hermann, her treasured great-nieces, Alli-Anne and Harper, and her special great-nephew, Hurston, as well as great-nieces and nephews Will, Gabe, Amelia, Brett, Ty, Karis, Katie, Joy, and Mary Charlotte along with many friends who were touched by her generous spirit.
A proud 1963 graduate of Grand Ridge High School, Saundra dedicated over 30 years of service to the Florida State Hospital before pursuing her passion for caregiving at the Marianna Convalescent Center. Her commitment to her profession was paralleled only by her dedication to her faith, as she lived a life exemplifying Christian values.
Saundra's love for her family was the cornerstone of her existence. She relished in cooking for her loved ones, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere at family gatherings, particularly during the holidays. An avid fisher when she was able, Saundra also found solace in the pages of a good book and the joy of spoiling her grandchildren. Known for her candid opinions and hearty laughter, she was the glue that held her family together, guiding them with her wisdom and strength.
Many will also remember Saundra by some of her favorite sayings, like "You ain’t Lyin'," "And all of the above," "This is True," "Happier than a dead pig in the sunshine," "The good Lord don’t like ugly," "This that and the other," and "What not and what have you," which became the markers of her wisdom and wit.
Above all, Saundra was a woman of great faith, whose selfless acts of kindness and unwavering support will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love and her indomitable spirit will continue to inspire those she has left behind. Saundra Lee Applewhite's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with devotion, resilience, and grace, and she will be deeply missed by all who were graced by her presence.
Saundra’s children would like to send a special “thank you” to the staff of VITAS hospice as well as Randy Houser, Amanda Applewhite and Deanne Berry for the excellent care they provided to Saundra.
A funeral service to honor the memory of Saundra Lee Applewhite will be held at Sneads Assembly of God on Thursday, March 19, 2026, beginning at 1:00 PM Central Time. The Applewhite family will receive friends and family for visitation on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the chapel of McAlpin Funeral Home.
