Colonel Robert Gregory Sloan, USAF (Retired)

Colonel Robert Gregory Sloan, USAF (Retired), passed away Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama.

 Col. Sloan, affectionately known as “Bob”, was born in Graceville, Florida on September 25, 1940, to the late Kennon and Nina Murdock Sloan. Moving to Malone and attending Malone Middle School he then entered Georgia Military Academy in Milledgeville, GA. He then joined the USAF spending 13 years and then graduating from Arizona State University in 1972 with a BS in Business Administration. He attended Officer Training School, then Aircraft Maintenance Officer Course, Chanute AFB, Illinois, then assigned to the 29th Flying Training Wing, Craig AFB, Alabama, as Maintenance Control Officer. June 1975, he transferred to Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph AFB, TX, Maintenance Staff Officer.

 He then was assigned as OIC, 36th Aircraft Maintenance Unit, 51st Composite Wing, Osan AB, Korea. December 1979 assigned to the Emerald Coast, 325th Aircraft Generation Squadron, Maintenance Supervisor, Tyndall AFB, Florida. July 1982, Chief Policy, Plans and Procedures Branch, Deputy Chief of Staff/Logistics, Headquarters USAFE, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, attending Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell and awarded the Logistics Research Award in 1986. July 1986 returned to the Gulf Coast taking command of the 325th Maintenance Training Squadron, Component Repair Squadron and Aircraft Generation Squadron, Tyndall AFB, FL. In 1989 Colonel Sloan returned to USAFE as the Chief of Logistics Inspection, Office of the Inspector General, HQ USAFE, Ramstein AB, Germany, taking command of the 86th Logistics Group, Ramstein, until his reassignment to Eglin AFB, September 1995 as the Logistics Group Commander.

 Following his 39 years of serving as Colonel in the USAF, Col. Sloan has enjoyed his retirement years living in Graceville, where he and his beloved wife Vaughnett has enjoyed quilting and owning the Crafty Cats Quilt Shop. In his spare time, he loved playing golf, watching NFL and his much-loved FSU, “Go Noles”. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Mission.

 Col. Sloan is survived by his beloved wife Vaughnett Sloan, three daughters Paige Kimball (Dan), Lynne Hughes(Larry), Rachel Wilson (Damon), son Ralph Smith, eight grandchildren seven great grandchildren and fur-baby, Rascal.

 A Celebration of His Life will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the Chapel of James & Lipford Funeral Home with Bro. Raymond O’Quinn and Bro. Damon Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Marvin Chapel Cemetery with James & Lipford Funeral Home in Graceville directing.

 A time of visitation for friends and family will be 10 a.m. Wednesday until time of the service.
