Russell Edsel Potter, Sr.

Russell Edsel Potter, Sr., a cherished patriarch and respected member of the Sycamore community, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, in Marianna, Florida. Born on February 26, 1935, in Sycamore, Florida, Russell's life was a testament to his unwavering faith, love for his family, and dedication to his work.

Russell was a proud graduate of Greensboro High School, class of 1953. Shortly after graduation, he began a fulfilling career at Florida State Hospital. His strong work ethic was interrupted only by his service to his country; Russell was drafted into the Army and spent two years in Germany, an experience that broadened his horizons and instilled in him a sense of duty. Upon returning home, he resumed his position at the Florida State Hospital in the Paint and Cabinet Shop, where he dedicated 40 years of service before retiring.

In retirement, Russell found joy in his hobby of refinishing furniture, a craft that showcased his attention to detail and patience. A devout Christian, Russell was a lifelong member of Sycamore Baptist Church and attended Rock Bluff Assembly of God, where he found great comfort and community.

Russell's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty Arnold Potter, his son Andy Potter, his parents Wilton and Ellie Barr Potter, his brother Edgar Potter, sisters-in-law Ellen and Dorothy Potter, and his grandson Justin Potter. His legacy continues through his daughter, Sharon Todd (Billy), his son, Rusty Potter, his daughter-in-law, Melody Potter, his brother, Mayo Potter, his sister, Betty Mulford (Kimble), and his adored grandchildren; Josh Thompson (Lauren), Andrea Potter, Drew Potter (MaKenna), Ashley Lycan, Holly Potter (Brian), Kevin Todd (Cynthia), Keith Todd (Martha) and great-grandchildren; John Austin Thompson, Cason Todd, Ellis Todd, Blakely Todd, Craig Lycan, Zoe Morris, Jack Morris, Sophia Vega, and Emma Vega. As well as many other extended family members and friends.

A man of simple pleasures, Russell enjoyed daily meals with his friends at the Apalachee Restaurant in Bristol. His presence at the table will be deeply missed by the many who knew and loved him.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Marianna Health and Rehab, as well as Jackson Hospital, for their compassionate care of Mr. Potter in his final days.

Russell's life was a beautiful tapestry of devotion, service, and love. His memory will be treasured by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, in the chapel of McAlpin Funeral Home in Sneads, Florida with Rev. Bill Mayo officiating. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 1:00 PM Eastern Time, with funeral services starting at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. Interment will be in Sycamore Cemetery.
