Board Receives Clarification on Probationary Contract Termination

Questions about how Jackson County School District employees move from probationary to annual contracts prompted discussion during last week’s Jackson County School Board meeting, as board members sought clarification on how the timelines work for instructional staff.

The discussion came during consideration of personnel items, when board member Chephus Granberry asked about a list of instructional employees serving under probationary contracts and the dates attached to those employees.

Deborah Barber explained that instructional employees move to annual contracts once they reach their one-year employment anniversary with the district. Superintendent Hunter Nolen added that the probationary period lasts 180 days for some employees, though Barber later clarified that teachers serve a full calendar year probationary period, while 90-day periods apply to non-instructional staff.

Granberry said he had not previously seen employment dates listed in personnel documents and wanted to better understand how the process works for employees hired at different times during the school year.

School officials explained that the dates vary because employees are hired throughout the year. Cindy James, administrative assistant, told the board that once an employee reaches the end of the probationary period, they finish the remainder of the school year on an annual contract rather than beginning another probationary term.

Granberry raised concerns about how that affects probationary terminations, noting that some employees hired later in the year may only spend a short portion of a school year under probationary status before converting to annual contracts.

Barber responded with an example, explaining that if a teacher were hired February 20, 2026, that employee would remain probationary until February 20, 2027, at which point the employee would become annual contract personnel.

Board member Rex Torbett also questioned how the annual contract designation works once the probationary period ends midyear. Torbett noted that employees may technically become annual contract employees in February even though the school contract year ends in May.

Barber confirmed that employees become annual contract personnel at the conclusion of their probationary year, even if only a portion of the school year remains. Torbett commented that the system could become “real complicated” because the dates are based on individual hire dates rather than the start of the school year.

After discussion, the board unanimously approved the personnel agenda item.
