Inside the Cupboard

Nothing like a week with minimal (two to three games) of rec ball across Jackson County to regroup, revive, and get ready for the next round of sports.

Football will be a distant memory in the coming weeks with last regular season games scheduled to play this Friday night.

With the new FHSAA guidelines, there’s no losers in district, everybody plays whether you’re 0-10 or 10-0.

I think they’re modeling themselves after rec ball and sportsmanship trophies. Our readers are well aware of my tendency to be outspoken and although I have mellowed through the years, some stuff just can’t be overlooked by me.

It’s been 53 years since I graduated high school and in those 53 years, there have been changes that I never ever would have thought possible. If you are accustomed to reading my ‘rant’ in ‘A’ section, you’re probably thinking my half-heimers is kicking in – well it’s not.

Back before the war, we had winning teams, we set records that have stood the test of time and if you did not finish in the top two in your district, you went to the house or to another sport if you played multiple sports.

That being said have been replaced but at least one of those records in my thinking still remains the record. And that won’t change.

To say I am disappointed in FHSAA for some of their rule changes and by-laws is an understatement. I could say the same for choices made in school decisions, athletic decisions and the list continues. Things do not need to change just for the sake of change.

Before values and morals went out the door, teams won games, won district, had players at the next level. They did this without practicing past church time on Wednesday, without home and out of town games on Wednesday. They also did it without being catered to like they were champions before stepping onto the field.

Athletes work hard and they deserve credit however they are not red carpet category. I’m waiting patiently for November 11 and the Veteran’s Day parade to appear.

Superintendent Nolen Hunter awarded early dismissal so that students could participate and/or spectate the parade set aside to honor our veterans, both living and deceased.

There were over 70 entries in the Marianna homecoming parade this last Friday. I am very hopeful that those same entries respect the veterans who fought and died, fought and came home injured for life, or fought and escaped with no lasting care enough for those special veterans and attend the parade.

For the first time in the history of Jackson County, there will be two generals in the parade as well as 103 veteran appearing as the Grand Marshall. Show me I can be wrong, coaches, club sponsors, and everyone else who is considering not attending and show up and show out for our VETERANS!
