The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12046 recently recognized two members of Jackson County Fire Rescue for their dedication to public safety during a presentation honoring outstanding first responders.

Representing the VFW, Tyler Schaeffer presented Division Chief Johnny Padgett and Firefighter/EMT Austin O’Neill with VFW National Public Servant Citations. The annual awards recognize emergency medical technicians, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and dispatchers who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their communities.

Schaeffer said the recognition reflects the VFW’s deep respect for the men and women who protect local communities every day.

“Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects individuals who represent the highest standards of service,” Schaeffer said during the presentation. “Austin’s dedicated service to the Jackson County Fire Rescue Department and Chief Padgett’s commitment to the proactive community paramedic program reflect the level of service that we value in our county.”

O’Neill was selected to receive the VFW National Firefighters Public Servant Citation, while Padgett received the VFW National Emergency Medical Technician Public Servant Citation. At the time of the presentation, O’Neill was responding to a call and was unable to attend.

Schaeffer noted that for military veterans, recognizing first responders carries special meaning.

“When we leave our families and friends to serve, we trust that dedicated first responder personnel like Austin and Chief Padgett are safeguarding our communities with professionalism and courage,” he said.

VFW member Isaac Williams also presented the honorees with commemorative coins. One coin featured the words “Training Our Nation’s Finest Soldiers,” with the phrase “This We Will Defend” on the reverse, symbolizing the shared values of service and protection. The other coin said, “United States Airborne” on both sides.

Jackson County Commission Chairman Jamey Westbrook expressed appreciation for both the firefighters and the veterans who recognized them.

“We thank you for that in the deepest of ways,” Westbrook said. “I appreciate every one of you who served in the armed forces more than you’ll ever know.”

The VFW Public Servant Awards program is part of a nationwide effort to honor individuals who go above and beyond in protecting their communities and supporting public safety.
