A Life Remembered with Love

Douglas Matthew Schauer passed away on the morning of July 1st, 2026 in Marianna, Florida, at the Marianna Nursing and Care Center, at 58 years of age.  He was born October 17th, 1967 in Fort Lee, Virginia, where his parents were stationed while his father was serving in the U.S. Army.  Doug leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, compassion, and kindheartedness.

Douglas is reunited in heaven with his two loving parents, Paul Allen Schauer who passed May 2nd, 2021 (at age 79) and Connie Madeline Schauer (Meighen) who passed on June 2nd, 2011 (at age 68), as well as several furry friends he had affectionately cared for over the years.

He is survived by one daughter, Rachel Lauren Ezzell (Schauer) of North Carolina, as well as one younger sister, Amylee Catherine Boatright (Schauer) of Titusville Florida, and her husband Les Boatright, and two nieces, Emily Boatright and Christina Boatright.  Douglas is also remembered in the hearts of many extended relatives, cousins, co-workers, and loyal friends, all of whom he cherished greatly.

In 1985, he graduated Rockledge High School at seventeen years old and pursued higher education at the Citadel Military College of South Carolina (grad. 1989), before joining the United States Navy between 1989 and 1993.  In the Navy, Doug served aboard the submarine USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641), as a nuclear power specialist.  His hard work and dedication to his nation stems from Doug’s lifelong commitment to service, learning, and his qualities of loyalty and selflessness.

Douglas held an appreciation for continuing education and the pursuit of knowledge, embracing many academic pursuits throughout his life.  Some of these included a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry from the Citadel, a Master’s Degree in Information Technology, as well as numerous Certifications and credentials that he earned in the field of Information Technology, and computer network security.  Even at the end of his life, Doug was studying toward a future Doctoral degree, with hopes to someday teach others.

Doug was also a student of American history.  He held a special interest in Civil War history, and during his earlier adulthood Doug had actively participated in a number of Civil War re-enactment events at locations around South Carolina and Florida.  Later in life, he personally visited several key Civil War battlefields to connect with America’s past.

Doug was a patriotic American, always proud of his service in the US Navy, where he exhibited the essential traits of Duty, Honor, and Service.  He was always respectful of all veterans who had served their nation, and was honored to be a part of that common brotherhood.

Doug was a conscientious worker, having held a number of different jobs after his time in the Navy.  Even during his lengthy convalescence over the past year, Doug continued working remotely as a network security specialist for the City of Jacksonville, having attended a conference call with his co-workers just one day prior to his passing.

Douglas held a deep faith in God, and also a good sense of humor, not taking himself too seriously.  He had regularly attended church services until his declining health and mobility prevented him from physically doing so.  His was a kind and gentle soul, living life in a way that expressed the fruits of the Christian spirit (Galatians 5:22-23); including Love, Kindness, Patience, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Forgiveness, and Peace. 

Douglas Matthew Schauer will be remembered with deep love, respect, and fondness by those who knew him.   Whether through shared laughter, joys and accomplishments, or by his perseverance to overcome many of life’s sorrows and challenges, Doug’s life made meaningful contributions to his family, friends, loved ones, neighbors, and also to his nation.  Until we are reunited in God's perfect timing, may you find Peace and Rest.

Doug’s family wishes to express the deepest gratitude to the many friends, family, doctors, nurses, caregivers, staff, and understanding co-workers who have so generously assisted him with kindness and compassion during his long convalescence over these past many months.  (Matthew 25:37-40)

His cremains will be buried at sea by the United States Navy.  Final arrangements for a remembrance service are still in work and will be posted at a later date.
